FRiD aims to create new values and research areas through supporting challenging projects that potentially build a basis for trends in 10-15 years and/or those that are currently at the early stages of generating budding ideas, in order to strongly promote developing research frontiers and creating academic fields that will lead the world in the future. A team mainly composed of two researchers (duo) affiliated to different departments in Tohoku University and collaborators in overseas research institutions. The University’s own financial resources will annually provide 5-10 million yen with each research project for the next five years. After the university-wide call for new projects and a rigorous screening process, the university has selected two proposals from 16 ambitious applications that seek to create new fields. Both of the research projects form a cross-disciplinary team involving researchers from globally renowned institutions. and therefore we expect that these teams will take an international leadership in the future. These international collaborations FRiD supports will vigorously advance developing research frontiers and creating academic fields that will lead the world in the future.
