With the Accession Ceremony still fresh in people's minds, the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies will be hosting a lecture by Professor, John Breen. The lecture entitled, "What are (Japanese) Emperors for? Reflections on the Reiwa Accession" will answer fundamental questions about Japanese emperors. Professor Breen will examine in detail the Reiwai accession rights, tracing its historical origins to the Meiji Restoration. He will argue that kings and emperors use accession rites as a stage on which to construct, display and render meaningful an array of new and privileged relationships of power The lecture takes place in English and registration is not required. @About the Speaker John Breen holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and is professor at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies in Kyoto, where he edits the journal Japan Review. He has published widely in English and Japanese on the imperial institution and on Shinto. Among his English publications are A Social History of the Ise Shrines: Divine Capital and A New History of Shinto.
