More recent research achievements derived from similar approaches have resulted in various advanced medical examination apparatuses, artificial internal organs and life-support systems, which are now in active clinical use. These developments have given birth to a new discipline, medical or clinical engineering, which is drawing great attention. At the same time, a new specialized occupation has been born in the medical field, as the need has arisen for specialists who can operate and manage advanced medical equipment from a background of solid engineering knowledge: clinical engineers. The Department of Clinical Engineering conducts education as follows: In the first year, students attend courses common to all College of Life and Health Sciences Departments, to develop character and acquire knowledge in a broad range of specialized fields. This is followed by lectures and practical exercises in medical and engineering-related basic and specialized subjects. Basic practical exercises in clinical engineering are directly supervised by Chubu’s College of Engineering faculty members in their engineering laboratories. Following this, students undergo clinical training on campus or in actual medical institutions, to learn how to correctly operate and manage the most advanced medical equipment on their way to becoming professionals, educators or researchers capable of developing new equipment and resolving related problems. At present, many medical institutions are actively introducing, for clinical use, advanced medical equipment of increasing sophistication and precision. This suggests employment opportunities, in the clinical medical field and in equipment development, for a new breed of clinical engineers who combine knowledge and expertise in engineering (electric/electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, data processing, etc.) with life science.
